If you are a true Southern Californian, you must be culturalized in the event that is "Taco Tuesday." Though it may be no "Cinco de Mayo," it is an awesome excuse to go forego that leftover lasagna that has been sitting in your fridge for a week and instead go out with some friends to your favorite taco shop. As for tips: usually the sketchier looking place the better. Never go to the americanized sit-down restaurants with hired mariachi bands who sing and dance around your table in order to distract you from that overpriced and mediocre burrito sitting on your plate. Instead, hit up the shack with graffiti on the walls and metal bars around the windows (most likely there for protection against the thefts that come to steel their secret sauce). Besides making the trip across the border to Tijuana, your best bet in finding top-notch authentic tacos is going to the iffiest looking taco stand in your neighborhood. Never judge a book by its cover when it comes to the best taco shop.
As for recommendations, I am sticking with Encinitas, CA since I feel I may know it best.
- El Torito Market: an authentic Mexican market with the best street tacos and salsa in town.
- Le Papagayo: on the fancier side but come for Happy Hour to indulge in the best shrimp taco that you will ever have the pleasure of stuffing your face with.
- Karina's Taco Shop: the best carne asada one could ever dream of.
- The Taco Stand: a little on the "trying too hard to be trendy and modern" side, but still lots of street taco options and lots of yumminess.
